Who we are
Energy Traders Europe represents 180 companies from over 30 European countries. Those companies trade electricity, gas, carbon and various other products. We aim to make sure that power and gas markets are well-designed, competitive and pan-European. This allows them to make the biggest possible contribution to keeping costs down, ensuring security of supply, ensuring competitiveness and enabling the transition to a carbon neutral economy. We represent our member companies’ interests by working with decision makers to shape the design of markets, by developing standard contracts which make trading simpler and by developing IT standards to make the exchange of transaction data easier. About the role
The gas market continues to play an important role in securing Europe’s energy supplies and in the ongoing decarbonisation of the economy. The internal gas market has helped the EU withstand one of the largest energy crises by enabling access to alternative supply sources and encouraging energy savings at times of scarcity. While this adaptability helps navigating the complicated geopolitical situation of today, the gas market can also play a role in driving decarbonisation. The EU is seeking to achieve growth of the market to 35bcm of biomethane and 20 million tonnes of hydrogen by 2030.
The effectiveness of the internal gas market, both in terms of ensuring the supplies we need and contributing to decarbonisation, will depend on how integrated national markets are and on whether gas can be traded freely between countries. This level of integration differs throughout Europe and deviations from the agreed EU rules are becoming increasingly frequent, limiting the benefits of cross-border trading at a time when the EU is seeking to improve industrial competitiveness. Thus, Energy Traders Europe is focused on working with policy makers to ensure the consistent application of the EU acquis, on removing barriers to trade and on enabling a stable, future-proof environment to trade gas across Europe.
The role we are seeking to fill:
We are seeking a person who can understand the complexities of the gas market and identify the barriers which the regulatory environment could create for our member companies. That person should be comfortable working with senior stakeholders to make the case to change those rules and should be capable of identifying ways in which the rules could evolve.
Your role will involve:
- Supporting the work of our Gas Committee, in particular, our Renewable Gas Working Group and regional subgroups working on consistent implementation of EU rules.
- Leading projects to assess changes to legal and regulatory frameworks, and leading and chairing workgroups of member companies on identified topics.
- Making sure that the work of those groups is well-organised, allows all members to contribute and leads to the production and delivery of effective and timely advocacy material.
- Ensuring that the views of all member companies are reflected in positions, provide information and feedback and field questions.
- Representing Energy Traders Europe at relevant industry initiatives and developing a network of contacts across the industry.
Your profile
- Will have at least 5 years’ experience of working in the energy industry, ideally in a commercial, regulatory or policy role related to gas trading.
- Will be able to write and speak English fluently.
- Will understand how the EU institutions and decision-making processes operate.
- Will either be based in Brussels or be able to commit to being in Brussels frequently.
- Will have strong communication and advocacy skills – with the ability to simplify complex messages and target them to the relevant audience.
You’ll succeed because…
- You are able to understand complex and fast changing areas of policy and regulation and assess the impacts of those changes for our members.
- You will be able to understand member company’s diverse interests and, in doing so, identify opportunities to build consensus.
- You are well-organised, able to plan effectively and are comfortable juggling several competing priorities.
- You are a team player with strong collaboration skills and a can-do attitude.
- You are able to understand complex pieces of law and regulation, while remaining able to distil complex ideas and communicate with clarity.
- You thrive in a fast-paced environment and are comfortable working under pressure.
- You have excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to interact with colleagues and member companies effectively and comfortably.
You’ll love it because…
- You’ll be part of a dynamic, diverse and very experienced team.
- You’ll be working in and seeking to improve the performance of the gas sector which has a significant role to play in ensuring energy security and accelerating decarbonisation.
- You’ll have significant flexibility about how you do the job.
- There will be opportunities to represent Energy Traders Europe at meetings and events across Europe and to engage with senior stakeholders.
What we offer
- A competitive salary and benefits package
- Flexible and hybrid working arrangments
- Support for professional development and training
